Synopsis

‘My name is August.
I won’t describe to you what I look like.
Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse.’

Ten-year-old August Pullman wants to be ordinary. He does ordinary things. He eats ice-cream. He plays on his Xbox. He feels ordinary – inside.

But Auggie is far from ordinary. Born with a terrible facial abnormality, he has been home-schooled by his parents his entire life, in an attempt to protect him from the cruelty of the outside world. Now, Auggie’s parents are sending him to a real school. Can he convince his new classmates that he’s just like them, underneath it all?

Narrated by Auggie and the people around him whose lives he touches, Wonder is a frank, funny, astonishingly moving debut to be read in one sitting, pass on to others, and remember long after the final page.

MY REVIEW

First I would like to say that R.J. Palacio’s writing was just right and beautiful, considering that most of the book was told by really young children. Most authors don’t really get this part right, but while I was reading I could still feel that innocence and joy that distinguishes kids.

This is one of those books that makes you want to hug everyone in it. Auggie was such a sweet and smart boy and his story, I know talks for thousands out there that have to go through the same everyday of their lives.

It develops the problem of bullying so well and it truly shows the value of kindness and  showing the different perspectives of all the characters, I believe was genius. It makes us understand that we all go through bad times in our life but that should never stop us from always trying to be kind to everyone.

I think everyone should read this book, no matter how old you are. It’s just one of those books that makes you feel right, that leaves a mark inside you that you just know will always stay there.

    1. I’m sorry I answer just now, apparently your comment was on a spam folder I had no idea existed and I just found it there. I watched the movie and I have to say it is really good, they changed some stuff but that didn’t bother me. Both are really beautiful and hope you can like them as much as I did.

  1. I’m so glad you also loved this book! I agree 100% on what you said about getting the kids’ voices right. She writes from the POV of a 10 year-old, a few teens and adults. And she gets every voice perfectly right. I loved that!

This book is sweet, and bitter (dog-damn-it!), and it made me laugh and cry and smile and cry again… It’s just beautiful ♥
